Bayern Munich must end 33-year run to get past Real Madrid in Champions League semi-final

2 weeks ago 9

Bayern Munich were no doubt left with a bittersweet feeling from their first leg with Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final, having performed well, but still managed a result to take to the Santiago Bernabeu. It also leaves them looking to achieve a task that only one side has managed in history.

After drawing the first leg away from home, only once in the 24 clashes Real Madrid have had at the Santiago Bernabeu thereafter has seen them go out before. As per Diario AS, the only precedent comes from 1991, when Spartak Moscow took a 0-0 draw to Madrid, and left with a 3-1 win at the Bernabeu.

Their record at the Bernabeu against Bayern is nine wins, two draws and two defeats, while Carlo Ancelotti has never been beaten by the Bavarian side. Meanwhile Thomas Tuchel does have one run he hopes to continue – he is unbeaten at the Bernabeu. 2-2 draws with Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain, as well as a 3-2 win with Chelsea form his record away to Los Blancos, albeit the latter saw the Blues exit due to their defeat in London.

No doubt Real Madrid have plenty of figures in their favour, not least that only Atletico Madrid have beaten them this season. Their last defeat at the Bernabeu was on the 8th of April 2023,  when Villarreal won 3-2, in a game that meant little to Ancelotti’s side. Ancelotti and company are strong favourites for the return leg, despite being largely outperformed by Bayern in the first leg.
