Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich adresses Real Madrid and Barcelona links, explains lack of agent

Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich has little certainty on his future going into the summer, with just a year left on his contract, and the possibility that the Bavarian side will look for a sale if he does not sign a new one. Added into the mix, the 29-year-old has chosen represent himself rather than use an agent.

Kimmich looked almost set for an exit this summer after Thomas Tuchel benched him earlier in the season, but the impeding exit of the Bayern manager has again shifted matters in Munich. During an interview with Diario AS, he was asked how important the next Bayern manager would be for his future.

“This is a really interesting question for me, but it’s not the most important thing right now. I know that when you sign a contract you don’t sign it with the coach. You sign it with the club. For me, the most important thing is the club, not just the coach. But of course it’s also important to know what the coach thinks about you and the team. Other people in the club are concerned with choosing the coach.”

In general, Kimmich was clear that he would sit down with Bayern before considering alternatives this summer.

“I want to talk to Bayern. And when I do that, I won’t go out and talk to the press about it. I’m only focused on the two games against Real Madrid.”

But did have glowing words for Los Blancos and Barcelona, who have both been linked with the German international.

“At the moment I’m not thinking about this. As I already said, I will speak to Bayern first. But of course Barcelona and Real Madrid are amazing clubs with an amazing history.”

Kimmich explained that his decision not to use an an agent was in part due to wanting to hear things straight from the mouth of the clubs he was dealing with.

“The advantage is that you can speak for yourself, but this can also be a disadvantage. Sometimes it’s hard to talk about yourself. You are responsible for your decision. This is the most important thing for me: being at the table, listening directly to what those in charge say and being able to speak directly with the club and the coach. This helps me make a very good decision for my family and me.”

Since moving to Bayern nine years ago, Kimmich has been considered the best in the world at different points both in midfield and at right-back, but his stock has fallen of late. While two seasons prior Bayern would’ve been unlikely to consider letting him go, but he no longer seems to be the cornerstone of their plans.
