Girona will put a seal on their best ever season in May, and as they welcome Barcelona to Montilivi this Saturday, looking to do the double over them for the first time ever, could even battle for second place. Defender Eric Garcia has revealed what has been working so well for them.

During a recent interview with Sport, Garcia explained that the intensity of work and team spirit were major factors.

“I think the union there is. A large part of the group comes from the Second Division, they know what it is to suffer to go up to the First Division. They were already with Michel. Then, we also have a very particular way of playing that suits all players very well. And also the demands we always put on ourselves, in all training sessions, and that is what allows us to win so many games.”

“Of course, I can’t talk about before, when they were in the Second Division, which is when he arrived, but you immediately see that he has a very clear way of playing and how demanding he is with it. We always know how we have to play and he insists on it a lot, in training, he does many video sessions with us and this leads to these results.”

Michel Sanchez is sure to finish as manager of the year, and the Catalan defender confirmed that his impact was a large influence on the side, including his motivational speeches.

“He takes care of all the details. As I said, we do a lot of video sessions. We know how we should play and how our rival plays. The training sessions also last a long time. He always tells us that he is trying to give us more complicated tasks than the ones we will later encounter in the game.”

Michel was a key part of Eric’s decision to head to Girona late in the transfer window, and he revealed that the young coach from Madrid even predicted their European finish.

“It was because of what he communicated to me, because of how I saw the team. He told me that if I came he was sure we could be in the top eight and reach the Conference League. He already saw that we could reach Europe and we have been lucky enough to reach higher.”

Garcia also explained that it was due to salary limit issues that he left Barcelona on loan, and Xavi had wanted to hold onto him, confirming he would be returning to the Blaugrana this summer to evaluate his options. Girona are reportedly interested in holding onto him, and are willing to make him their flagship signing at the back.
