Inter President Zhang sends message from China

Inter President Steven Zhang released a video marking the club’s 20th Scudetto, but there is a curious reason he is not in Milan for the celebrations.

The Nerazzurri won the title with five rounds to spare after securing a 2-1 victory over arch-rivals Milan in the Derby della Madonnina this evening.

The supporters are running wild through the streets of the city this evening, with fireworks displays outside San Siro and in Piazza Duomo.

However, President Zhang could only send a video message from his home in China.

Zhang sends message

This is because he has been unable to fly to Italy since last summer, following a series of financial and legal problems.

The Court of Appeal in Milan ruled against Zhang and in favour of the China Construction Bank Asia Corporation over a €320m plus interest sum that is already being discussed in Hong Kong.

Although there is no guarantee he would be in legal jeopardy if setting foot on Italian soil, the fact he stayed away even during the Scudetto celebration suggests he must at least fear it is a very real possibility.

He is also working on securing a new loan that can allow the Zhang family and Suning holding company to pay back the loan to Oaktree worth €380m including interest that is due on May 20.
