Jamie Carragher names new manager favourite for Liverpool job

After rumours suggested that Ruben Amorim’s move to Anfield was doubtful, Jamie Carragher believes Roberto De Zerbi is the new favourite to take over as Liverpool manager.

The Reds are still looking for a replacement for Jurgen Klopp, who will stand down at the end of the season and complete his trophy-filled nine-year tenure.

Amorim of Sporting Lisbon was seen by many as the clear favourite to follow Klopp, but The Athletic have put an end to the rumours, as a recent report links the highly-regarded 39-year-old manager with West Ham.

The Hammers are expected to let David Moyes leave the club in the summer and they are looking for a new manager.

After Xabi Alonso rejected the opportunity to become the new manager, Amorim became the outstanding favourite for the Anfield job.

However, West Ham’s interest in the Sporting manager has changed the situation completely.

Carragher identified De Zerbi as the most likely successor to Klopp for one particular reason when discussing his thoughts on his X account.

‘Richard Hughes wanted De Zerbi at Bournemouth, so he must be the favourite if this is true,’ wrote Carragher.

Liverpool may face competition for De Zerbi

Having led Brighton to the Europa League last-16 and into Europe for the first time, De Zerbi has garnered praise for his outstanding work there.

De Zerbi has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich and Barcelona as well. Liverpool will not find it easy to sign the young Italian manager.

His stock is high among the new generation of managers and his playing style is widely respected.

Additionally, he made sure the Seagulls finish sixth in the Premier League last season.

But this campaign has been more difficult; Brighton are currently in tenth place.

Liverpool have not yet denied that they are not targeting Sporting manager Amorim, so it remains to be seen where the promising young manager will be heading next season.
