Javier Aguirre continues to leave Mallorca future open – “They haven’t spoken to me”

On the whole, it has been a fairly successful season for Mallorca. They may still be in the relegation battle, sitting six points clear of 18th-placed Cadiz, but they had a sensational run to the Copa del Rey final, where they heartbreakingly lost on penalties to Athletic Club.

Javier Aguirre masterminded that cup run, although there is a decent chance that the Mexican coach is no longer in charge at Mallorca from next season. His contract expires in the summer, and so far, negotiations have yet to take place.

Despite the fact that he will be out of contract is less than two months, Aguirre is relaxed about the situation, as he told the media on Friday (via Diario AS).

“They haven’t spoken to me, and they don’t have to because the goal (avoiding relegation) hasn’t been achieved yet. I insist that I am happy here. It’s a club that called me at a difficult time and I’m happy. I have an exquisite relationship with the board, with the owner, with the players. I think I’m in the ideal place, but the most sensible thing to do is to focus on the league, get the necessary points for salvation and once that happens, the most sensible thing to do will be to sit down and talk.”

It does make complete sense for the matter to be addressed once the pressure is off, although there’s no doubt that many Mallorca supporters will be desperate to see Aguirre renew as soon as possible.
