Milan Player Ratings vs Genoa: Defensive Flaws Plague Rossoneri Again

Milan once again fired blanks in the third match of the Champions League group stage. The Rossoneri have yet to score continentally.

Milan failed to return to winning ways in Serie A as Genoa held Stefano Pioli’s side to an enthralling 3-3 draw at San Siro. Rossoneri conceded inside the opening five minutes but turned the game on its head, only to throw away the lead in the game’s dying embers.

Fikayo Tomori’s poor reaction sent Mateo Retegui to the spot only five minutes in, with the Italy international putting it away to fire Genoa 1-0 up. Alessandro Florenzi drew Milan level just before halftime, only for Alberto GIladino’s side to reclaim the advantage at the start of the second half.

However, Milan found the answer to Genoa’s defensive block in the 72nd minute through Matteo Gabbia. Olivier Giroud completed the turnaround only three minutes later, giving the hosts hope that they could end a three-game winless league streak. Yet, second-half substitute Malick Thiaw had other plans.

The German defender sent the ball into his own net to inspire Genoa to a well-deserved draw and pour more pressure on Pioli as we look at Milan ratings.

Marco Sportiello – 4

There wasn’t much he could’ve done for all three goals, but the fact is he conceded from each shot on target.

Alessandro Florenzi – 7.5

Even though his crosses were wayward again, he made amends with a rare header to equal the scoring on the stroke of halftime.

Matteo Gabbia – 5.5

Almost effortlessly lost the aerial duel with Ekuban for Genoa’s second goal and had several erratic moments on either side of halftime.

Fikayo Tomori – 5

Grew into the contest as the game progressed, but a player of his experience and stature should know better than to give away such a cheap penalty.

Theo Hernandez – 6

A lack of his signature runs down the left flank clipped Milan’s wings in the first half. But the star left-back returned to his usual best after the break and nearly scored a sensational solo goal at the hour mark.

Ismael Bennacer – 6

Made numerous sloppy passes in the first half as he often sought a killer ball. Despite his attempt to drive his side forward, this wasn’t his day.

Tijjani Reijnders – 6.5

Like his colleague, the Dutchman had a rough entry, though he gradually improved in the second half, showing initiative and decisiveness on the ball.

Rafael Leao – 6.5

Completed a number of progressive runs on the left but couldn’t find the proper finish.

Christian Pulisic – 7

Back to the No. 10 role, the USMNT forward enjoyed a decent game, pulling all the strings in the front third and even came a whisker away from scoring in the first half.

Samuel Chukwueze – 7

His misfortunes with disallowed goals continued, but despite seeing his first-half strike overturned, the Nigerian refused to give up and claimed an assist.

Olivier Giroud – 6.5

The veteran had two glorious chances to get on the board and converted one.
